Compare programmes using the same questions
Italy has several routes to an English-taught medical degree. Start your comparison with the exact degree, campus and application year. A public or private label is too broad to determine whether a programme fits your budget and plans. Build one comparison sheet and leave a field blank when you have not verified the answer.
Record the university's admission call, programme regulations, fee regulations and curriculum as separate sources. A course overview explains the experience; a dated admission call explains the application rules. When the two differ, ask the university which document governs your intake. Do not reuse an old deadline simply because it appears near the top of a search result.
Check the entrance test and applicant category
For a public-university example, the University of Pavia's Harvey course admission page describes a national IMAT entry requirement for its English-taught Medicine and Surgery programme and says the test composition can vary between academic years. For a private-university example (listed among non-state institutions by Italy's Ministry of Universities and Research), Humanitas University's 2026/27 application page describes its HUMAT selection test and separate applicant categories. These are examples of different routes, not instructions for every Italian medical school.
For each programme, ask which category applies to your citizenship and residence circumstances. Then confirm where to register, whether there is a separate university application and which ranking process applies. A friend's category or test registration may not match yours. Keep each task distinct so an application receipt is not mistaken for an exam booking.
Compare the full cost and payment conditions
Use the fee regulations for the academic year you are considering. Ask whether the amount depends on citizenship, residence, household finances or supporting documents. The Humanitas fees and scholarships page, for example, links year-specific regulations. Read those regulations rather than treating every number on a long web page as a current quotation.
Build a budget with tuition, application and test charges, housing, utilities, food, transport, insurance, study materials and travel. Add the dates when money must be available. A manageable annual total can still produce a cash-flow problem if several deposits fall due together.
Separate confirmed funding from hoped-for funding. Check scholarship eligibility, selection, renewal conditions and the timing of payment. Ask what happens to deposits if you withdraw or cannot complete enrolment. Keep the written refund terms before paying.
Look closely at clinical training
Compare the curriculum beyond the first year. Identify where clinical activities take place, when patient-facing learning begins and how the university supervises it. A hospital name is a starting point for questions, not a complete description of your own experience.
- Which placements are compulsory, and where are they delivered?
- How are students assigned to clinical groups?
- What local-language preparation is required before patient contact?
- Are placements on one campus or across several locations?
- What health, documentation or attendance requirements apply?
Ask for the programme's current curriculum and placement information. Include transport and accommodation implications in your comparison. A course that suits you academically may require a different daily routine from the city-centre experience you imagined.
Separate qualification checks, pre-enrolment and visa steps
The Italian government's Study in Italy enrolment guidance places evaluation of foreign qualifications with the receiving institution. Ask the university which documents it needs for your qualification, including any translation, legalisation or qualification-verification evidence. Do not order every possible document before establishing the actual requirement.
For applicants who require a visa, review the Universitaly international-student steps with the university. Pre-enrolment and university validation do not guarantee a study visa. The competent diplomatic-consular authority makes that decision. Keep the relevant consulate's instructions alongside the university's list and allow time for missing documents.
Use unanswered questions to narrow your shortlist
Before submitting applications, mark each comparison item as confirmed, pending or unsuitable. Prioritise questions that could change your decision: an unaffordable payment schedule, a language milestone you have not planned for or an unresolved qualification issue.
Use our Italy destination overview to organise your research and compare it with the universities' official information. If you need help structuring a shortlist, submit the programmes you are considering and your questions through the enquiry form. Check professional registration with the authority in the country where you intend to practise before committing. University admission and a future professional pathway are separate decisions.
Common questions
Does every English-taught medicine programme in Italy use the IMAT?
Do not assume that. Pavia's Harvey course describes IMAT entry, while Humanitas publishes its own HUMAT route. Read the dated admission call for each programme.
Should I compare only annual tuition?
Compare the full budget, payment dates, scholarship conditions and refund terms. Include housing, travel and clinical-placement logistics.
