Start with the programme, not the university name
Choosing where to study medicine in the Czech Republic requires more than comparing a ranking and an annual fee. Your shortlist should explain whether you can meet the entry requirements, sustain the full cost, manage the learning environment and pursue your intended career after graduation. A strong comparison records evidence alongside every conclusion.
Start with the exact faculty and programme. Charles University has separate medical faculties, so “Charles University medicine” is not a complete application choice. The First Faculty’s 2026/2027 admissions instructions explicitly require separate applications when applying to other faculties. Keep each faculty on its own comparison row. An unanswered question should remain unanswered until you have an official response.
Build an evidence sheet you can actually use
Create one page per programme with the qualification, teaching language, duration, admission route, tuition currency, published fee cycle and accommodation options. Add the official URL and the date you checked it. This makes an update easier than rebuilding a shortlist from saved social posts.
Use three labels: confirmed, needs clarification and does not meet our needs. For example, a fee published for an earlier intake is evidence of that intake’s cost, but it does not confirm your future fee. A missing rule is a reason to ask the faculty, not a reason to assume flexibility.
- What would stop us applying?
- What would stop us accepting an offer?
- Which questions can only the faculty or a professional regulator answer?
Compare the actual entrance assessments
Different assessment formats call for different preparation. For its 2026/2027 cycle, Charles University’s First Faculty described a written first round covering biology, chemistry and general science, followed by online multiple mini interviews. Masaryk’s official admissions information describes separate written tests in chemistry, biology and physics.
These examples show why a generic “medical entrance exam” plan is insufficient. Read the current rules for your cycle and use the faculty’s own preparation material. Assess your subject gaps before paying several application fees. If a waiver is mentioned, confirm the exact qualification, grades and evidence required. Eligibility for a waiver should never be inferred from another student’s experience.
Inspect the curriculum and clinical language
Open the study plan rather than relying on a facilities photograph. The First Faculty publishes study plans by academic year. Look for the sequence of foundational subjects, clinical teaching, practical placements and final assessments. Note which details you still need to ask about, such as placement organisation, assessment resits or changes between years.
English instruction does not remove the need to communicate with local patients. Masaryk’s admissions information states that students undertake Czech language training and examinations for clinical communication. Ask each faculty how it teaches clinical language, what standard is expected and what support exists if you struggle. Include language learning in your preparation and weekly workload.
Compare a normal study week and the full cost
Evaluate the city through the student’s daily routine: travel to teaching sites, housing contract length, food preferences, quiet study space and access to support. Check accommodation availability with the university rather than treating a typical room price as a reservation.
The official Study in Czechia accommodation guide explains that dormitory places are limited and private rents may exclude utilities. Build a separate housing scenario for each shortlisted city. Add tuition, ordinary living costs, document preparation, travel and an emergency reserve. The lowest advertised annual tuition may not produce the lowest manageable six-year budget.
Check the career route separately
University admission and permission to practise medicine are different decisions. Identify the country where you may want to work and ask its competent regulator what applies to your qualification and circumstances. The EU’s professional qualifications guidance explains that recognition and other formalities can be required before practice.
Keep the regulator’s response with your shortlist and record the exact qualification it refers to. Ask which further assessments, supervised practice or language evidence may apply in your circumstances. A university’s general description of international opportunities should not replace this check. Revisit the route as rules change during your studies.
Turn the research into a defensible shortlist
Agree your priorities before giving programmes scores. An applicant might place more weight on assessment fit and clinical language support, while another family needs a budget with greater headroom. Keep mandatory requirements separate from preferences. A programme that fails a mandatory condition should not win because it scores well on the city.
Finish with two or three viable choices and a short explanation for each: why it fits, the evidence supporting that view and the unresolved risks. Use our university comparison checklist to organise the evidence. Recheck official information before applying and again before paying an offer deposit. If you need help organising the questions, bring your evidence sheet to a Vistara Abroad enquiry.
Common questions
Should I compare Charles University as one medical programme?
Compare the exact faculty and programme. Admissions instructions, assessments and costs can differ between faculties, and separate applications may be required.
Does English teaching mean I will not need Czech?
Check the faculty’s clinical language requirements. Masaryk explicitly includes Czech training and examinations to support communication with patients.
