A parent's checklist before paying a medical university deposit

Use the period between an offer and payment to confirm what you are accepting, where the money goes and which questions need a written answer.

Read the offer with the student

A university offer can create pressure to move quickly, especially when a payment deadline appears close. Before paying a medical university deposit, sit down with the applicant and read the complete offer, any conditions and the referenced contract. Identify the programme, teaching language, campus, academic year and date by which acceptance is required.

Check whether the offer is conditional on final school results, original documents or another requirement. Write down the condition and who will complete it. An offer, an accepted place and completed enrolment are stages to track separately. Do not let a payment receipt become your only record of what the family has agreed to.

Verify the payment instructions independently

Reach the university's payment guidance from its official website, not only through a message forwarded to you. Compare the recipient, currency, payment reference and method with the offer. If a request changes bank details or introduces a new beneficiary, pause and confirm it through a separately verified university channel.

Semmelweis University's admissions FAQ publishes its payment methods and instructions for identifying the applicant. Follow the instructions applicable to your offer rather than copying an old screenshot. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre phishing guidance recommends independently verifying important email requests through another communication route. This is particularly useful for large payments.

Identify which payments can be recovered

Make a separate row for the application fee, deposit, enrolment or administration charge, tuition and accommodation payment. For each, record whether it is refundable, under what circumstances, how to request a refund and who decides. Ask what happens if the student withdraws, misses a condition or cannot obtain the required immigration permission.

RSU's published fee information identifies non-refundable application and registration administration payments. Semmelweis' FAQ also identifies a non-refundable deposit. These examples show why different payments should not be treated as one refundable tuition amount. Save the policy version applicable to the student's offer and request clarification when a summary and contract appear inconsistent.

Test the budget beyond the first payment

The deposit is the beginning of a longer funding commitment. Put the full expected course cost beside the family funding plan, with tuition separated from living expenses and one-time setup costs. Note the amount due next, its currency and the latest date the university must receive it. Confirm whether a bank transfer's arrival, rather than the day it is initiated, determines timely payment.

Test a less favourable scenario: a higher exchange rate, rent increase or additional term. Decide how the family would respond before committing. Keep an emergency reserve accessible to the student. Avoid funding assumptions that depend on unconfirmed scholarships, casual work or a future refund.

Close academic and professional questions

Ask the student to explain what they have learned about the curriculum, assessment workload, patient communication and progression rules. This helps identify whether the decision rests on the programme itself or on its location and reputation. Record questions that still need an admissions or faculty answer.

Keep future licensing checks separate from admission. A university accepting the applicant does not settle every requirement in another country. The World Directory's own explanation states that listing is not itself recognition or accreditation. Verify the intended professional route with the relevant regulator and document what remains uncertain before making a non-refundable commitment.

Check that arrival and support plans are workable

Discuss housing options, travel to teaching sites, insurance, student support and the process for accessing healthcare. Ask which arrangements the university provides and which remain the student's responsibility. Use the destination government's current immigration guidance for the applicant's circumstances, rather than assuming an offer guarantees entry.

Agree a practical communication plan with the student. Parents can help track questions and budgets while the applicant remains involved in decisions and university correspondence. Do not assume you can obtain application information on the student's behalf. Semmelweis' admissions FAQ, for example, describes limits on sharing applicants' personal data with third parties.

Keep a clear payment and acceptance record

Before authorising payment, ensure unresolved questions have an owner and an answer date. Retain the offer, applicable terms, official payment instructions, proof of payment and confirmation that the university has matched it to the applicant. Record who paid and the reference used. Avoid storing card details or banking credentials in the application folder.

Ask the university to clarify any discrepancy in writing. A decision can still be made with uncertainty, but the family should understand exactly what is known, what could change and which money is at risk. A deliberate acceptance process is more useful than a rushed payment followed by unanswered questions.
